Come in Rain or Shine
This body of work is a follow on from the ‘Sense of Wonder’ and ’Land of the Roaring Forties’ series where Dewhirst continues pursuing inspiration from the wilder NZ Landscapes. Mountains, Swanndri and floral motifs are incorporated into her canvas, offering moments of symbolism amid impasto applications and translucent washes. Her intention is to relay the feeling of exhilaration and felt in nature through the application of paint.
The abstract image and gestural paint stokes convey the harsh winds and unforgiving terrains in a surreal cut-and-paste environment, perhaps drawn from a coarse memory, or a feeling conjured up by the imagination and captured in paint. Dewhirst’s series hands control over to a certain automatism, a collaboration of both the conscious and unconscious effort. She knowledges that “a lot happens by chance,” and there is a spirit of playfulness and an excitement in following and interpreting her unique vision of the New Zealand terrain.
